On the increase of murders of human rights defenders in Colombia

The report May peace not cost lives! How to protect human rights defenders in Colombia is the result of a project carried out by the International Office for Human Rights Action on Colombia (OIDHACO) and the Taula Catalana Coordinating Group for Peace and Human Rights in Colombia, with funding from ICIP.

The number of murders of human rights defenders and social leaders, mainly from peasant, Afro-descendant and indigenous communities, has increased dramatically in Colombia since the implementation of the Peace Agreement between the FARC-EP and the Colombian state. What is happening? Who is murdering the defenders and why? Why are these groups affected the most? Why do the actions of the state seem to have no impact? These and other questions are addressed in the study through the analysis of experts, representatives of Colombian civil society and the communities most affected by violence, as well as representatives of the Colombian state and of the United Nations System.

Two human rights defenders who collaborated in the preparation of the report will be participating in the launch event of the publication: Carlos Guevara, head of communication of the Somos Defensores Program, and Leyla Arroyo, Afro-Colombian leader of Black Communities Process, of Buenaventura.
